Wheaton roofing - Is Your Roofing Company Telling You About ...

Working with roofing companies can be stressful! Many homeowners aren't excited about the prospect of having a roofing company install a new roof since the project can be expensive and often unexpected. However, smart homeowners can greatly lessen the stress associated with this project by choosing the right company to work with. Learn about what to ask your contractor before you sign a contract so you can be sure that you're working with one that's qualified. If your contractor isn't talking about ventilation or you receive a blank stare when you ask about it, consider moving on. Here's why ventilation is important and why you should never skip it.

What Is Roofing Ventilation?

Many homeowners assume that their attic is completely closed off. However, the next time you're outside your home, take a look up. If your roof has been installed correctly, you should see vents underneath the overhang of the roof. These vents allow air to circulate inside the attic and they're vital to protect the integrity of your home.

Why Is This Important?

A ventilation system lets air circulate throughout the attic, but why is this important? If the air in the attic is stagnant and humid, it will eventually compromise the adhesive that's placed on the underside of each shingle. This can cause the shingles to delaminate and make them curl and blow away on a windy day or during a storm.

Additionally, ice dams can form during the winter if you live in a cold climate. Ice dams happen when the warm air from the home rises and accumulates at the top of the roof, while the cold air remains at the bottom. The warm air at the top will melt any accumulated snow and then the water runs down until it's stopped by snow and ice. The water pools behind the snow and ice until it eventually refreezes and this pooling can eventually cause leaks into the home.

If ventilation is properly installed, the attic will stay cold and this eliminates the problems caused by the melting snow. Although many people are initially concerned about cold air leaking from the attic into the living spaces in the home, this problem can be easily combated with proper insulation.

Other Problems Caused By Improper Ventilation

Without a proper ventilation system, it's unlikely that the shingles will be covered by a warranty if you ever need it. The effectiveness of the shingles is diminished without having the vents installed so if the roofing companies you're working with don't mention them, ask to make sure they're included. Additionally, it's unlikely that your homeowner's insurance will cover repairs if you need them. Oftentimes insurance policies exclude problems that are caused by installation defects. If you're thinking of purchasing a home, have it inspected by a qualified roofing company to ensure that the roof has the proper ventilation system.

A properly vented roof can help protect your home so don't let your roofing company skip out on this very important step. If you find that your roof doesn't have these vents, consider calling roofing companies to see if they're able to add them to your home to help eliminate potential problems before they start.
