At first blush, spending $2.5 billion and traveling more than 350 million miles to find more of the same may seem like a bit of overkill. But training the full suite of Curiosity's instruments on something fairly well known during what is still the rover's shakedown period represents an important opening move in the rover's mission, researchers say.
During its two-year prime mission, the one-ton, Mini Cooper-sized lab on wheels aims to see if its new home ? Gale Crater with its towering central peak, Mt. Sharp ? once may have been hospitable to simple forms of life. Finding and analyzing any organic compounds in the mountain's ancient layers represents the ultimate prize in that quest.
The soil analysis establishes a relatively modern reference against which the chemical and mineral makeup of Mt. Sharp's far-more ancient land forms can be compared.
The soil results have yielded "an unprecedented look at the chemical diversity in the area that is representative of the rest of the planet," said Michael Meyer, the mission's program scientist, in a briefing at the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union, currently underway in San Francisco.
The results "form a solid baseline for our continued exploration," he says.
During its six-week stay at a site named Rocknest, the rover sampled soils from a mini dune about 5 inches high dubbed Windrift. The rover scooped five samples in all. The initial samples were used to clean the interior of the sample-delivery system of any contaminants that hitched a ride from Earth. The fifth sample served as the fodder for the rover's internal chemistry labs.
Below the dune's surface the sands were fine-grained compared with the surface layer ? somewhere between grains of sugar and flour in size. The large, salt-sized grains on the dune's surface, which included tiny glass nodules, were coated in the red dust characteristic of Mars, explains Ken Eddget, the lead scientist for a camera on the rover?s robotic arm that fills the role of a geologist's magnifying glass.
Water vapor, carbon dioxide, molecular oxygen, and sulfur dioxide were among the most prominent gases generated by the three instruments that comprise the rover's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) component, notes Paul Mahaffy, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and SAM's lead scientist.
But the SAM also detected some simple hydrocarbons made up of chlorine and methane. Does that mean Martian-based organics are in the bag? The team suspects not, although it is conducting a thorough analysis. Surface soils are exposed to a range of radiation and chemicals in the atmosphere that tend to dismantle organic compounds.
The researchers say they suspect that the chlorine came from perchlorates in the soil, perhaps calcium perchlorate, Dr. Mahaffy says. Perchlorates are chlorine-based salts. The Phoenix Mars lander found perchlorates in abundance at its polar landing site in 2008.
The carbon in the methane is another story, however. It could represent residual contamination from Earth, despite extensive efforts to scrub the rovers before launch. Or the carbon could have come from the soil. But carbon in soils could be organic as well as inorganic. Indeed, Mahaffy holds out the possibility that the simples forms of chloromethane SAM detected could have formed during the analysis process, with carbon dioxide freed from the soil samples as they were heated serving as the source of the carbon. If the carbon is organic, researchers still have to figure out if the carbon is indigenous to Mars, or hitched a ride to the surface on micrometeoroids.
Given the various ways organic compounds can be destroyed on the Martian surface, "it's really going to be an exciting hunt ... over the course of this mission to find early environments that might be kind of protected from this harsh surface environment and really see what we can add to the organics story," Mahaffy says.

The research conducted by Henkjan Honing, professor of Music Cognition at the UvA, and a team of neurobiologists headed by Hugo Merchant from the UNAM, shows that rhesus monkeys cannot detect the beat in music, although they are able to detect rhythmic groups in music. The results of this research support the view that beat induction is a uniquely human, cognitive skill and contribute to a further understanding of the biology and evolution of human music.

It seems a trivial skill: children that clap along with a song, musicians that tap their foot to the music, or a stage full of line dancers that dance in synchrony. And in way, it is indeed trivial that most people can easily pick up a regular pulse from the music or judge whether the music speeds up or slows down. However, the realisation that perceiving this regularity in music allows us to dance and make music together makes it less trivial a phenomenon.
Previous research showed that not only adult humans, but also newborn babies can detect the beat in music. This proved that beat induction is congenital and can therefore not be learnt. In their experiments with rhesus monkeys, the researchers used the same stimuli and experimental paradigms from previous research conducted on humans and babies. They measured electrical brain signals using electrodes while the participants were listening.
Confirmation of hypotheses
These research results are in line with the vocal learning hypothesis, which suggests that only species who can mimic sounds share the ability of beat induction. These species include several bird and mammal species, although the ability to mimic sounds is only weakly developed, or missing entirely, in nonhuman primates.
In addition, the results support the dissociation hypothesis, which claims that there is a dissociation between rhythm perception and beat perception. This new research suggests that humans share rhythm perception (or duration-based timing) with other primates, while beat induction (or beat-based timing) is only present in specific species (including humans and a selected group of bird species), arguably as a result of convergent evolution

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its smaller ally could win a two-thirds majority in a December 16 election for parliament's lower house, a survey showed on Thursday, a result that would help break the policy deadlock plaguing the world's third-biggest economy.
Kyodo news agency's survey of more than 60,000 voters showed that former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's LDP could win about 295 seats in the 480-member chamber while its long-time coalition partner, the New Komeito, was likely to win close to 30 seats.
A two-thirds majority would allow the lower house to override the upper chamber, where no party has a majority and which can block legislation. That would help break a stalemate that has plagued successive governments since 2007.
Abe, who quit suddenly in 2007 after a troubled year in office, is promising to press the Bank of Japan to radically ease monetary policy to beat deflation and a strong yen.
He has also promised to stand tough against China over disputed isles in the East China Sea and wants to loosen the limits of Japan's 65-year-old pacifist constitution on the military while recasting what conservatives see as overly apologetic accounts of Japan's wartime past.
The newly launched, right-leaning Japan Restoration Party, founded by popular Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto and now headed by outspoken nationalist Shintaro Ishihara, looks set to win fewer than 50 seats, the poll showed.
Early predictions had suggested that the LDP might fall short of a majority even with the New Komeito's help, forcing it to turn to the JRP or other parties to form a government.
Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's Democratic Party of Japan, which swept to power in 2009 to end more than 50 years of almost non-stop rule by the LDP, may end up with as few as 60 seats, the Kyodo survey showed.
Kyodo said that about 40 percent of voters were still undecided with just days to go.
Analysts said some voters could decide not to vote for the LDP at the last minute out of fear that they would win by too large a margin, but the general trend was unlikely to shift direction.
"It's a much better than 50-50 chance that the LDP will win a majority on its own," said Chuo University political science professor Steven Reed.
A recent legal change prevents the opposition from taking the budget hostage by refusing to pass a funding bill, so the new government will find it easier to implement spending plans regardless of the size of its majority, and it can pressure the BOJ without enacting legislation.
Other legislation except the budget and treaties, however, must be approved by both houses of parliament. A bill rejected by the upper house can then be enacted if two-thirds of the lower chamber vote in favor.
Kyodo surveyed more than 63,000 voters in about a half of 300 single-member constituencies. The other 180 members come from proportional representation blocks.

Take for example West Nile Virus. When eight New Yorkers died of brain infections in 1999, most everyone assumed they had a common virus. But New York City's medical examiners insisted on autopsies. And, what do you know, they discovered the first U.S. cases of West Nile Virus.
In many places around the world, though, there aren't enough doctors available to perform routine autopsies. So it's tough to figure out what's hurting people and where money should be spent to improve health.
That's where something called a "verbal autopsy" might help, says Swedish epidemiologist Peter Byass.
Byass and his team at Umea University have been working on the technique for about a decade. Their latest version combines a simple interview with high-tech algorithms to deduce a cause of death.
Most people who live in rural areas of the world die in their homes and haven't seen a doctor, Byass says. So after a death, a community nurse or field worker goes to the family's home and asks some questions: What happened before the death? Was the person bitten by insects or snakes? Did she have a rash? Swollen feet?
The answers are fed into a computer model, which then churns out a list of what likely killed the person.
"It's not that different from what a physician does in his head when he's filling out a death certificate," Byass says. "It's the mathematical equivalent of that process."
For some diseases, like the measles and malnutrition, the algorithms are almost as good as a trained doctor at pinpointing the cause of death.
Byass and his team recently tested how good their technique is at picking out deaths from AIDS. Although the results aren't finalized yet, he says, it looks like the algorithm can accurately say if a person dies of AIDS about 90 percent of the time. "AIDS deaths are complicated," Byass says. "This isn't easy."

And for other diseases with similar symptoms, like malaria and pneumonia, verbal autopsies have led to blunders. These mistakes have made some clinicians skeptical about the technique.
"Verbal autopsies give you a broad picture of what's happening in a community," Sir Brian Greenwood, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, tells Shots. "When you get specific details then people are probably overusing the tool."
Even a trained doctor's conclusions about death often don't match up with that of a real physical autopsy, Greenwood says. "Unless you do a very careful post-mortem examination ? chop them up and do pathology ? it's really hard to tell cause of death."
Still though, some information is better than none, Byass says. "In the U.S. and Europe, we take for granted why people die, but 50 percent of deaths around the world aren't recorded."
Knowing how someone dies is indispensible information for a community when it's deciding how to allocate precious healthcare resources, Byass says. "What diseases should you target for vaccines? Where should you be spending money? Without the data, you're guessing really."
So far the use of verbal autopsies has been limited to small research projects. But the World Health Organization is now pushing to make it more routine in places where deaths aren't recorded. Byass says his group is even getting ready to release a smartphone app that deduces cause of death.

ROME (Reuters) - Italian petrol stations began a 60-hour strike late on Tuesday to protest against rising costs and falling profits, causing long queues as drivers rushed to fill up before pumps closed.
Hitting at the peak shopping period before Christmas, the strike comes at unwelcome time for retailers. Weak consumer spending has been a key factor in Italy's sluggish economy, which has been dipping in and out of recession since 2008.
"It is incredible, with all that petrol costs us nowadays, that they can even think of going on strike," Rome resident Ida Lauro said as she queued in her car.
Unions have agreed to maintain minimum service on motorways, with at least one station open every 100 km (62 miles).
In a joint statement, unions said they called the strike to combat "a true aggression against the roughly 24,000 small businesses and 120,000 workers in the sector".
They say oil companies have forced stations to absorb the costs of discounting campaigns, allowing them a profit of just one euro for every 100 euros ($130) or 55 liters of petrol sold.
Oil distributors in Italy Esso and Shell were not immediately available for comment. A government attempt to come to an agreement with the unions this week fell through.
Workers will demonstrate outside government buildings in Rome on Wednesday to pressure the state to intervene.
The strike will end on Friday morning on ordinary roads and late on Thursday on motorways.
Between December 17 and 22 the petrol stations will refuse to pay oil companies for refills. Then, between Christmas and New Year, they will refuse credit and debit card payments in protest at bank charges on electronic payments.
Mario Monti's technocrat government has cut spending and raised taxes since it was appointed last year to pull Italy out of a debt crisis, and is the focus of increasing protests.
The government was thrown into crisis last week when the party of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi withdrew its support, prompting Monti to announce he would resign once the 2013 budget bill is passed before Christmas.

BANNU, Pakistan (AP) ? Taliban militants armed with a rocket, hand grenades and automatic weapons attacked a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing six people, police said.
The attack occurred in the city of Bannu, which serves as a gateway to the North Waziristan tribal area, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in Pakistan. The city has been hit by repeated attacks over the year.
The militants began the attack by firing a rocket at the gate of the police station and tossing hand grenades, triggering a battle with police last lasted over an hour, said senior police officer Wagar Ahmed.
Three policemen and three civilians were killed in the attack, said Ahmed. The civilians were coming out of a nearby mosque when they were shot by the militants. Eight people were wounded, including three policemen and five civilians.
Three militants were killed during the attack and one escaped.
Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to The Associated Press from an undisclosed location.

A-Gas has announced the UK launch of Honeywell?s new Low GWP refrigerant Solstice?yf into the automotive aftermarket. Solstice?yf has been designed as a low GWP solution for the changing requirements in legislation, facing the automotive industry.
The European directive 2006/40/EC, which went into effect in 2011, requires that all new car platforms for sale in Europe use a refrigerant in its air conditioning system with a GWP below 150.
From January 1st 2017, all new cars within the European Union will need to meet this requirement. The phase-out of high GWP refrigerants will affect the entire automotive industry, from manufacturing to automotive servicing and repair.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Arboreal tarantulas are known from a few tropical places in Asia, Africa, South and Central America and the Caribbean. These tarantulas generally have a lighter build, thinner bodies and longer legs, better suited for their habitat. They have increased surface area at the ends of their legs, allowing them to better climb different surfaces, while their light build makes them more agile.
Their core area is the Amazon, from where most of the species are known and normally very common, living in the jungle or even in house's surroundings. Now, nine new species were described from Central and Eastern Brazil, including four of the smallest arboreal species ever recorded.
The study was performed by Dr Rog?rio Bertani, who is a tarantula specialist and a researcher at the Instituto Butantan in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His results have been published in the open access journal ZooKeys.
"Instead of the seven species formerly known in the region, we now have sixteen," said Dr Bertani. "In a resurrected genus with a mysterious single species known from 1841, we have now five species." "These are the smallest arboreal tarantulas in the world, and their analysis suggests the genus to be very old, so they can be considered relicts of a formerly more widely distributed taxon."
Other discoveries include new species of tarantulas living inside bromeliads. "Only a single species had been known to live exclusively inside these plants, and now we have another that specialized in bromeliads as well." A further species was found at the top of table mountains where trees are rare. "This species also inhabits bromeliads, one of the few places for an arboreal tarantula to live that offer water and a retreat against the intense sunlight" he says.
The discovery of all these new species outside the Amazon was unexpected and illustrates how little we know of the fauna surrounding us, even from hot spots of threatened biodiversity like the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado (a kind of savannah vegetation). These species are highly endemic and the regions where they live are suffering high pressure from human activities. Therefore, studies for their conservation are necessaries. Furthermore, all these new species are colorful, which could attract the interest for capturing them for the pet trade, constituting another threat.

Trader Joe's has an abnormally large amount of seasonal pumpkin products right now, which I was ALL over.
I still want to go back for the pumpkin breakfast bars, and perhaps some ice cream.
So, last on my Trader Joe's list is the ravioli, which I plan on having for dinner very soon.
The honey roasted flavor sounds amazing...I have been trying to decide what type of sauce to pair the pasta with.
World Market sells a pumpkin sauce made to serve over pasta, but I am also thinking a browned butter (with sage or rosemary?) topped with ricotta cheese and a honey drizzle might be nice, too. TBD.
