Twitter CEO reveals plans for interactive tweets, content curation, reinforces belief in syndication

Twitter has ruffled a few feathers recently, so when CEO Dick Costolo took the stage at the Online News Association conference in San Francisco, he took the opportunity to put some minds at rest. First he dismissed the idea that the service would become a media company by forcing users to the site or official app for content, before reasserting his belief in syndication. Costolo then went on to imply that the reason behind the tighter (and unpopular) API controls was ensuring quality -- stating that Twitter would reach its full potential now there's more control over how tweets are delivered. With boots strapped, we can look forward to some new features, such as the option to curate messages that are published (such as during live events) plus tweets with interactive features like polls during live sports games. The famous 140 character limit is to remain, but will also serve as a "caption for additional functionality." Perhaps of most interest to disenfranchised developers, however, was the mention of application functionality in tweets, where short messages could contain small interactive apps. Something for devs to get potentially get back on board with? We hope so. But until further details unfold, we're still left considering our options.

How should I format my drives when turning my Windows machine into a hackintosh?
Copy all the data to an external, install OS X, and copy it all back. If you plan on using both Windows and OS X at any point, you might also want to format those data drives as ExFAT first. ExFAT is readable and writable by both Windows and OS X, so if you're just storing files on the drive it's really the best format to use. Alternatively, if you don't have an external drive for transferring purposes, you can set up your system so your data is readable on any OS with just a few drivers.

How can I keep my desktop layout completely in sync?
You can't 100%, but if you sync your desktop folder with an app like Dropbox you can come pretty close. Just follow these instructions. If you want to maintain the layout, a Windows app called Fences can set up rules to keep everything in the same position. Just use the same rules on every machine and you'll be good to go. OS X doesn't have an exact equivalent to fences, but you can press Command+J in the Finder to set automatic organization options and apply those to every machine.

Someone accidentally signed up for a Playstation Network account using my email address. What do I do?
The listener who sent in this question is hesitant about calling support because it's a hard thing to explain, but that's probably the best course of action. All that needs to be said is this: "Someone signed up for a PSN account using my email. I think it was an accident. I don't know how to contact him/her, so could you let them know they should change the email address associated with the account?" If that doesn't work, Whitson realized that with this mistaken account's user name, it's possible to contact the owner and let them know about the mistake. Just log onto PSN and send them a message. They might ignore it, but maybe they'll be curious enough to look into the problem.

UK lawmakers tell G4S to waive $92 million fee for Olympic failure

LONDON (Reuters) - G4S's bill for its embarrassing London Olympic staffing failure could rise after British lawmakers demanded the embattled security firm waive its management fee and compensate Games staff neglected in its chaotic recruitment drive.

The world's biggest security firm has been under fire since admitting just two weeks before the Games began that it could not provide a promised 10,400 venue guards, embarrassing the government - a key customer - and forcing British troops to cancel holidays and fill the shortfall.

G4S has already estimated a 50 million pound ($81 million) loss on the Olympic contract relating to the cost of deploying additional police and military personnel and the likely penalties the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games will impose, but that may prove conservative.

In a report published on Friday, Britain's Home Affairs Committee, which twice hauled in G4S chief Nick Buckles to explain the Olympic debacle, said responsibility for the failure was with G4S and that its most senior personnel should be held accountable for making misleading staffing assurances to security officials so close to the start of the Games.

"Far from being able to stage two Games on two continents at the same time, as they recklessly boasted, G4S could not even stage one," said Keith Vaz, Chairman of the influential Home Affairs Committee, referring to an interview managing director of G4S Global Events, Ian Horseman Sewell, gave to Reuters in July.

"G4S should waive its 57 million pound management fee and also compensate its staff and prospective staff who it treated in a cavalier fashion."

LOCOG has so far parted with only 90 million pounds of the 237 million pound contract and earlier this month insisted the remainder would have to be negotiated.

In a statement on Friday G4S accepted responsibility for its failure to deliver in full on the security contract, but reaffirmed its right to the management fee, which relates to set-up costs for the operation.

Vaz advised LOCOG to negotiate "robustly" with G4S in the public interest on the remainder of the contract.

The total security contract for the Olympics is worth 284 million pounds, including work already paid for in 2011 by the Olympic Delivery Authority.

G4S said discussions on the final financial settlement with LOCOG were underway.

The staffing blunder has already hit G4S hard, hurting its share price, bringing Buckles' job into question and jeopardizing its future chances of winning core government work - the chief concern for the board and shareholders.

With an internal report on the debacle due out this month, their views on whether the company can still win UK prison and police contracts with Buckles - a 27-year company veteran - at the helm are likely to weigh on a decision about his fate.

RECRUITMENT SHAMBLES

The Committee said it had received submissions from applicants that wanted to work for G4S at the Olympics with many explaining that they had been dropped without explanation despite passing an interview and vetting stage. Others were accredited and trained but had no work when the Games started.

"One applicant from Northern Ireland says that he reported for work in Glasgow as requested but was sent home because G4S had run out of uniforms," the report read, adding that the day after the Olympic closing ceremony was the first date on which the number of staff supplied by G4S met LOCOG's demand.

G4S, which eventually supplied 7,800 guards for the Games, said it had already started compensating some of the staff affected.

"G4S has already agreed a process, in conjunction with the GMB Union, for compensating those candidates who completed training and accreditation or made a significant journey through the recruitment process, but were unable to work at the games," the company said in a statement.

G4S, the world's second-largest private sector employer, running operations from border control to guarding ships from pirates and cash transportation in 125 countries, makes over half of its 1.8 billion pounds of British revenue from the government.

As private sector involvement in police and criminal justice services - key markets for G4S - grows, the Committee recommended the government should establish a register of high-risk providers, with "a track-record of failure in the delivery of public services".

The debacle is the second major setback for the firm inside a year after it caved in to investor pressure to scrap a 5.2 billion pound acquisition of Danish cleaning firm ISS at a cost of around 55 million pounds last November.

The group, which in August posted a 5.8 percent rise in first-half revenues to 3.9 billion pounds, is expected to make a full-year pretax profit of 424.89 million pounds according to a consensus of 17 analysts polled by Reuters.

Shares in the FTSE 100 firm fell heavily after the staffing shortfall was first announced but have recovered to around 5 percent down on before the news, valuing the business at around 3.7 billion pounds. $1 = 0.6164 British pounds) ($1 = 0.6173 British pounds)

Paul Ryan Cites a Different Video

DANVILLE, Va. - Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan sought to change the subject today from leaked videos to painting President Obama as someone who wants to spread wealth from rich Americans to poor ones.

"Mitt Romney and I are not running to redistribute the wealth. Mitt Romney and I are running to help Americans create wealth," Ryan said. "Efforts that promote hard work and personal responsibility over government dependency are what have made this economy the envy of the world."

Ryan is referring to a video of then-Illinois State Sen. Barack Obama speaking at Loyola University in 1998 when the future president said, "I actually believe in redistribution at least at a certain level to make sure that everybody's got a shot." The 14 year old video was posted Tuesday on the Drudge Report.

It's something Mitt Romney, campaign operatives and surrogates have also been trying to draw attention to in order to shift focus from a series of damaging videos released over the last two days that show Romney at a $50,000 per person Boca Raton fundraiser chastising the president's supporters as people who see themselves as "victims," are dependent on government and pay no income taxes.

Ryan continued the theme of "redistribution" at his rally here today saying the GOP ticket doesn't "resent other people's success." The videos were released by liberal-leaning Mother Jones magazine.

"We take pride in one another's success," Ryan said after a tour of an industrial machining plant. "Our job is not to fight over a shrinking pie in redistributed slices. Our job as leaders is to grow the pie so that everybody has a better shot at the American dream, and everybody can pick themselves up."

The vice presidential nominee may have wanted to stay out of the headlines surrounding Romney's controversial videos, but he was asked about them in several local interviews.

When asked by NBC News' Reno affiliate KNRV, Ryan described the way Romney made the comments as "obviously inarticulate in making this point."

To ABC News' Manchester, N.H. affiliate WMUR he described it similarly saying "it was an inelegant way of describing the point we're trying to make which is we need economic growth, we need job creation."
