Many services, such as Netflix, are generous enough to provide you with a few weeks or a month free of charge so you can try things out and see how they work for you. In most cases this should be enough time to decide if you want to pay, but if you need more time to make up your mind here's a trick that'll help you extend your trail period indefinitely.
Hacking and security blog Null Byte has figured out a way to essentially extend the Netflix trial period forever. It's pretty simple and can be applied to virtually any service that offers a trial but requires a credit card. Here's how it works:
- Get a pre-paid debit card
- Create a fake email account with one of the many free email offerings online
- Sign up for a free trial using the prepaid card and email address
- Use the amount on the pre-paid card so it isn't depleted when the trial expires and the card gets charged
- Abandon the trial account and repeat this process with a new card and new email address
Obviously this is a bit of work if you were to do it forever, plus that would technically be stealing. But if you want to try something out for a little longer than the offered period, this is one way to do it.
